Braga and Guimarães have many historical landmarks, but it can be difficult to mark them all in just one day. That’s why our professionals Driver/Guides will make it easier for you and offer a personalized attention on this private guided tour.

Guimarães is a city with a glorious historical past, whose history is associated with the foundation of Portuguese identity and the Portuguese language in the 12th century.

Come to discover the Portugal’s birthplace as a nation. Get immersed on the medieval atmosphere of its well-preserved historical centre, a Unesco World Heritage Site since 2001.

Here, was born the first king of Portugal (1109), D. Afonso Henriques. Here was born Portugal (1143).

Braga, a visit to one of oldest religious cities of the world, built more than 2000 years ago, “Bracara Augusta” was founded by Augusto, staying on one of the main Roman roads in the Iberian Peninsula, as it was the administrative headquarters of the Empire. Visit the first Portuguese cathedral, older than Portugal and Bom Jesus, UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site.

Meeting time and points

Pick-up and drop-off points will be your hotel/accommodation, or any other previously agreed location within the city area. In general, pick-up time is between 8am and 9am. The exact time to be concerted.

Maximum duration will be 9 hours. The Driver/Guide will advise about how much time to spend in each location, but he is not responsible for queues to enter the attractions or traffic jams that may happen along the course.

  • No special equipment or garments are required. Wear comfortable shoes and clothes. Sunscreen and hat, or a raincoat and umbrella are recommended, according to the season and weather conditions.

Our guided tours aim to be a unique and personal experience, supported on our expertise: we suggest an itinerary, one or two restaurants to lunch, and the most iconic monuments and attractions to visit. But, we want you to feel free to choose your favourite restaurant, your preferred monuments! We will adapt the itinerary, whenever possible, to meet your wishes.

That is why our price does not include lunch, or the tickets to visit monuments and attractions.

 

Guimarães itinerary:

  • Palace of the Dukes of Bragança: A majestic manor house built in the 15th century to be the residence of the Counts of Barcelos, later titled Dukes of Bragança. Shows architectural features of a fortified house and influences from northern Europe architecture. It is classified as National Monument and integrates the Portuguese Museum Network.
  • Guimarães Castle: founded in 10th century by the Countess Mumadona as a monastery, with time and as response to the frequent attacks by the Moors and Normans, it became a fortress, the primitive Castle of Guimarães. In the 12th century, Count D. Henrique and D. Teresa, after the birth of the Portuguese County, expanded it and improved its robustness.
  • Historical Centre: The historical centre of Guimarães, Unesco World Heritage Site since 2001, constitutes a unique vestige of a particular type of city design, comprising a succession of squares and a particular type of construction, fully erected with traditional techniques.
  • Praça de Santiago: In the core of the historical centre , this very old square, mentioned over time in several documents, still preserves its medieval atmosphere. Its name came from a legend, where  the apostle St. Tiago (St. James) brought  and placed an image of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
  • Lunch: free time for lunch on a typical restaurant.

Braga itinerary:

 

  • Cathedral of Braga: this was the first Portuguese cathedral, erected at the end of the 11th century, several decades before the founding of the country. Competing in power with the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela and is the jewel of the city. Displaying styles from the original Romanesque, Baroque, Gothic and Gothic-Flemish styles, it preserves within valuables artistic relics, of its more than nine centuries of history.
  • Cathedral’s Treasure Museum: where, among many others treasures, we may see the cross of the first mass celebrated in Brazil, led by Pedro Álvares Cabral.
  • Historical Centre: free time to wander trough the zone.
  •  Shrine of Bom Jesus do Monte: UNESCO World Cultural Heritage since 08 July 2019. The baroque language is predominant in the temple, although there are evidences of the Rococo and Neoclassical styles, as the construction lasted till 19ths
  • Return to Porto.

Notes: This attractions list is not mandatory nor exhaustive and it may be adjusted to your expectations. Besides, the itinerary may differ due to weather conditions, the time spent in each location and the guide’s criterion.

Difficulty level and accessibility: Easy - For All

This tour is classified as Easy. Comprises some short walking routes, yet accessible for those with limited mobility;

Not accessible by wheelchair at some buildings /locations. Panoramic ride is possible with collapsible wheelchairs, however the passenger may need someone’s assistance.
